Marking the Layout

Once you have chosen a location, the next step is to carefully measure and mark the locations of your beds. In 2015, I did this by building simple wooden frames of kiln-dried lumber for my raised beds and placing them in their locations.

Another method if you are not making raised beds is to use stakes to mark your beds and tying lengths of twine between them. I used this method in the fall of 2015 to remove my wooden frames and make my beds longer (last photo).

(FIND DIFFERENT PHOTO) Any way you choose to do this, I strongly recommend marking your beds and then taking some time to walk around your future garden space and make sure the layout looks the way you want it to from every angle before doing any digging. This way you can change, adjust and re-measure things if they aren’t quite where you want them. Expand?
